Innovation generated by clusters is among the core areas of inquiry of the Harvard Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Network. Consequently, this year’s meeting of the European MOC Chapter took place in the context of the Third International Cluster Conference on “Clusters as Drivers of Competitiveness: Development Issues” in Limerick, Ireland.

Co-organized by Innovate Limerick and Pôle Scientifique et Technologique du Canton de Fribourg, the conference brought together industry practitioners, policy-makers and academics from the sphere of cluster development. Cluster managers reported from their experiences on the ground in reconciling political interests with economic necessities and R&D dynamics. Other talks, above all the keynote lecture by Harvard scholar Christian Ketels, addressed clusters as drivers of competitiveness and their wealth-increasing effects. The conference benefited from the presence of numerous local speakers, who demonstrated the significance of clusters for the recovery of the Irish economy after the 2008 economic crash.

LBS master students analyze clusters as part of their MOC classes. The Limerick event prompted stimulating debates, which will be translated into the MOC teaching materials for LBS students. Furthermore, the Institute of Competitiveness (IoC) at LBS will intensify its commitment within the European MOC Chapter in order to help shape the encounter of competitiveness researchers and decision-makers in business and politics.

A detailed conference report will be published in the LBS Working Paper Series.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
