IBA 2014 students visit Opel Wien

As part of their Corporate Communication class with Dr. Kristin Engelhardt, the 3rd-semester students of LBS’s International Business Administration bachelor’s program visited Opel Wien. The objective of this study visit was to watch as to how internal communication works in real-life in the automotive industry. The students gained first-hand insights into team organization, the continuous improvement process, the suggestion system, face-to-face communication rules, and overall employee communication activities. Furthermore, the students learned to understand production processes as they are executed in the automotive industry.

Opel Wien, which is the biggest GM/Opel powertrain plant, was opened in 1982. As of now this plant has produced 37 million engines and transmissions. The yearly production amounts to 1.2 million units. 70 per cent of newly registered Opel/Vauxhall cars in Europe include a product of Opel Wien. Engines and transmissions from Opel Wien are exported across the world: from Europe to North America, Latin America, Asia, and Australia.
