The Fifth Ljubljana Forum on the Future of Cities hosted academics, public decision-makers and entrepreneurs to expose the newest trends in sustainable and inclusive smart cities. The conference entitled Smart City: Empowering Cities & People shifted the attention to the benefits of smart technologies for the people you work, create, dwell and live in smart urban spaces. Under the auspices of EU Commissioner for Transportation Violeta Bulc and Slovenian Prime Minister Miro Cerar, paper-givers from Central Europe, the Balkans and also from overseas shared their insights on industry solutions, smart city policies, and civic engagement.
As part of its activities in the Harvard Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Network and the Institute of Competitiveness (IoC) at LBS, Lauder Business School is particularly interested in the competitiveness prospects within a smart city. Consequently, Professor Pablo Collazzo delivered an invited talk on the Financial Instruments & Business Models panel, in which he addressed the question of building competitiveness within a smart city. LBS faculty member Professor Robert Braun discussed his latest research on autonomous vehicles, in which he innovatively combines socio-economic, philosophical and business angles on the introduction of driverless cars.
The sojourn to Ljubljana also marked an additional step in strengthening the bonds between LBS and the Ljubljana-based GoForeSight Institute and its director Blaž Golob. Mr. Golob and Professor Elisabeth Kübler, who heads both LBS’s International Relations and the Institute of Competitiveness, are currently joining forces on a conference workshop on Smart Cities – Urban competitiveness & challenges of participation to take place in Budapest in May 2016.
