On March 14 we were delighted to welcome Mag. Helmut Ettl, Executive Director of the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) for a fireplace talk in the LBS ballroom. This was a unique opportunity for our master’s students to meet one of the crucial players in the regulatory field of the Austrian financial market.
The event started with the introductory speech by Dr. Csermely, Director of MA studies. He highlighted major achievements in Mag. Ettl’s career, such as his track record at OeNB, Executive Directorship of FMA, representation at IMF and the European Commission and his important prediction regarding the Bitcoin bubble. Mag. Ettl is also an excellent sportsman and a person with an international mindset.
The FMA (Financial Market Authority) is an integrated supervisory authority established in 2002. The FMA is the Financial Market Authority that brings together the supervision of all significant providers and functions under a single roof. Among others, the FMA supervises banks, insurance undertakings, Pensionskassen (pension funds), corporate provision funds, investment firms, and investment services providers, investment funds, financial conglomerates, stock exchange companies, etc.
In closing, Mag. Ettl presented and chaired a lively discussion with LBS students and other important guests on several major topics from the current financial environment such as:
- The possibility for future financial crises (potentially arriving in this or in the next decade),
- The relevance of countercyclical capital buffers,
- The significant influence of Brexit, the effect on the markets and the subsequent consequences,
- The future of Cryptoassets in the economy and the proposal to handle them as financial instruments.
We would like to thank Mag. Ettl for his visit and the very inspiring evening. Please follow the link https://www.fma.gv.at/karriere/offene-stellen/ to find out about open positions at the FMA.
