On Tuesday, March 21, IML 2016 class had a day dedicated to Design Thinking and New Product Development (NPD) as part of their Creativity and Innovation Course with Dr. Stephan Jung. During the session, students were encouraged to come up with original ideas to either create innovation or to focus on problem solving of a particular issue and thereby satisfy a certain need.

Within the course, Prof. Jung introduced a 6-step design thinking model, which encompasses the process of understanding and defining a problem, exploring and researching, developing a concept, prototyping, testing and finally implementing the idea. The class was given complete freedom to come up with a number of ideas in a variety of areas that were ultimately narrowed down to 8 main topics of interest: Sports, Travel, Food, Education, Arts/Music/Design, Cars & Technology, Family & Animals, as well as Fashion.

Students were then encouraged to brainstorm and fine tune the existing topics. Eventually, Design Thinking Groups were created based on students’ choice with the aim to work together on developing the idea further in future. IML 2016 Class Representative Jeannine Madeleine Ölschuster describes the day, “The Design Thinking Day was a unique and great experience. It allowed the students to be innovative, creative and explorative at the same time, to think out of the box and study in an interactive and realistic way. All of us are already looking forward to the next session!”

As for continuation of the course, Dr. Jung has planned for students to go off campus and collect customer feedback. In his view, “Giving students room to experiment with their own ideas and encouraging them to think like an entrepreneur is a very important learning experience and preparation for their careers. Students start to actively think and also behave like entrepreneurs who are testing, validating and exploring their ideas”.

LBS faculty and staff are devoted to continuous improvement in teaching and training as well as to following latest trends in didactics.
