The Lisbon Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region is an international convention of the Council of Europe elaborated together with the UNESCO. The Convention stipulates that degrees and periods of study must be recognized unless substantial differences can be proved by the institution that is charged with recognition.
The Lisbon Recognition Convention is an important instrument for the Bologna reform process, which aims at creating a common European Higher Education area, which fosters the mobility of higher education stakeholders and simplifies the recognition of degrees and credits. Transparency and comparability regarding the skills and competences acquired by students are the main prerequisites for those goals.
In order to share best practices and to discuss arising challenges across countries, a delegation from Lauder Business School consisting of the Chairman of the Council, Prof. (FH) Mag. (FH) Martin Samek, the Director of Studies of the Bachelor’s program Prof. (FH) Mag. Julius Dem and the Director of Studies of the Masters programs Prof. (FH) Dr. Hanno Poeschl has been invited by the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) to participate in the conference of the Nexus project „Working with Learning Outcomes – Creating the foundations for recognition and accreditation in universities“. The conference took place at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen) in Germany on July 6 and 7, 2015.
The German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) with the support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has launched the project “Nexus – Forming Transitions, Promoting Student Success” in order to help universities with the continued implementation of the European Study Reform.
More than 130 representatives from Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences worked together to discuss and assess examples of successful implementations of the processes of formulating competence-oriented learning outcomes, designing adequate examination formats as well as of optimizing the recognition and accreditation practices in higher education institutions. Based on these presentations and discussion the participants were invited to reflect upon their specific challenges and to develop contingent approaches for their institutions.
The outcomes of this Erasmus+ mobility will soon be visible for students and other stakeholders of Lauder Business School in form of specific policies for recognition and accreditation as well as university wide standards for learning outcomes.
