On April 24 and 25, 2017, the Banking, Finance and Compliance 2015 cohort had a chance to participate in a Universal Banking simulation organized by Lauder Business School and TOPSIM®. The purpose of the simulation was for students to emulate “a flight simulator for managers”, based on a learning-by-doing approach.
Dr. Gernot Hinterleitner, Head of ICAAP at Raiffeisenbank International AG and a certified TOPSIM® lecturer, guided the BFC students through these two exciting days. Their task was to manage a virtual bank in the following areas: loan & deposit business, financial management, investment banking, wealth management, human resources and marketing.
Divided into 3 teams, the students had the opportunity to assume the role of a (virtual) bank’s management and thereby experience the typical conflicts associated with setting goals and objectives. Simulating real-life scenarios, they were running their own banks, competing against each other and making decisions while managing time constraints.
As Maria Victoria Sanchez Vargas explains, “This simulation is very useful as you can implement everything you have learnt from the first semester onwards, topics from monetary economics, asset management, banking business, compliance – here it all comes together!” Her colleague Alina Syrkina continues, “It is great to see all the theoretical knowledge put into practice and how every decision you make affects the performance of the business!”
Management simulations offer a high degree of transferable knowledge and skills through experience, which students can utilize in their future professional careers. Evgeniia Chukhareva describes her experience, “We really enjoyed participating in this simulation. Especially valuable experience is seeing all the interlinkages between different business areas. As a manager, you need to have an overview of the whole business and every decision you make matters!”
Dr. Hinterleitner, who has been conducting these simulations across various institutions for more than 10 years, was very impressed by the LBS students and emphasized that “This class is really thinking about their decisions, they act according to their plans and follow their strategy throughout different periods.” Moreover, he was very satisfied with the profound knowledge that BFC students showed during the simulation as well as the deep understanding of the parameters influencing the reality.
TOPSIM® Simulations are deployed in many companies across the US, Europe and Asia. In addition, they are used by more than 300 universities in Germany, as well as 70 per cent of the 30 DAX-listed companies. Some of the businesses are: UniCredit Bank Austria AG, Credit Suisse Group, Erste Group Bank AG, Allianz, McKinsey, BCG. Some of the educational institutions include: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Freie Universität Berlin, Universität Tübingen, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, Siemens CKI RWTH Aachen, Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, European Business School, WU Wien, etc.
