All third-country nationals, who would like to start their studies in Austria need a Residence Permit “Student”.

Students from EU-countries dispose of an European Health Insurance Card, which is valid in state hospitals and is being accepted by doctors who have signed a contract with the Austrian national health insurance (Gebietskrankenkasse). Please inform yourself prior to your departure to Austria.
All non-EU students are required to provide a valid health insurance for Austria. It doesn´t necessarily mean that it has to be from the Austrian government (Gebietskrankenkasse).
If you find an insurance company that offers an insurance which covers the cost of €60,000.00 and more, it will also be accepted (check the plan before signing the contract)! If something happens and you need to go to the hospital, you will have to pay the bills out of your pocket and then send the bills for the money refund. Sometimes the insurance companies don´t pay 100% of the money back that you have paid.
