2017: Robert Kotal @ Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel

Professor Robert Kotal
Shadowing the Department of Management @ Ben-Gurion University – Robert Kotal

As part of the 2017 Erasmus+ staff mobility, Mag. Robert Kotal EFA CFP visited the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva, to participate in the course Entrepreneurialism and Value-based Leadership together with Prof. David Silver and his teaching assistant TAL CASPI.

Mag. Robert Kotal had both active and passive teaching experiences during the staff mobility program. His input about value driven compliance approaches initiated some very interesting discussions with the participating students.

As part of the staff mobility, three field trips were scheduled to three different sites in Beer Sheva near the university:

1. HaMidbar NGO: The group met with the founder and entrepreneur of HaMidbar NGO, Maor Elkayam, who tries to mentor new urban start-ups, especially in the South of Israel. Start-ups will be supported by HaMidbar NGO as long as they are strong enough to stand for their own. Their work is based on ethic and cooperation with local residents, with all activity deriving from needs that they raise. Through these local initiatives they aim to produce solutions to global problems, while increasing the resilience of cities in Israel’s periphery.

In this capacity, he provides mentorship and support to social and business entrepreneurs, and provides support in writing and implementation of business plans, marketing and finance.

2. Also very impressive was the trip to Tamar Centre in the heart of Beer Sheva which bridges the economic gaps between Bedouins and the rest of Israeli society through education. The group realized that it is not enough just to provide the Bedouins with schools and teaching environment, but also to involve parents actively in the education process so they start to realize that education can help to reduce the extremely high unemployment rate of the Negev Bedouin population. The aim of the Tamar Centre is to advance the Bedouin community of the Negev by means of leadership development, programming for educational excellence, building community partnerships and empowering Bedouin society at every level.

3. In contrast to the both NGO´s, the Gav-Yam Negev Park, which is located at the heart of a new urban area, has created a clear link between Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and the IDF’s Technology Campus. The Park consists of 2 very modern main buildings and attracts important high-tech companies from Israel and from overseas. The strong association between the working areas of the complex made a huge impression on Mag. Kotal. He liked the visible involvement of well-known companies and the University of Beer Sheva in common projects.
